The Folks that make you Move!

Kat (she/her)

If I’m shinin’, everybody gonna shine. I was born like this, don’t even gotta try.

- Lizzo | Juice

Kat (she/her)

Kat (she/her) has been dancing her whole life. She trained in Jazz, Ballet, Tap, Hiphop, Contemporary, and Modern dance and has taught and performed with local companies in Alabama, South Carolina, and the Bay Area (since she moved here in 2012). Most recently she taught a virtual, fat-positive dance class promoting body liberation. Kat knows that many dance and fitness spaces can be exclusionary and harsh on the body and body image. She wants to tap into the side of dance that is self-care, catharsis, embodiment, pleasure, and empowerment. Her Shimmy Pop is low impact on joints, but high energy and expression. Kat loves biking, cats, being an aunt, and learning more about her Assyrian Lebanese ancestry.

- Ntozake Shange

Archaa (she/her)

Archaa's earliest memories of doing yoga involve a sheet spread onto her carpeted living room floor and comfy pj's- no yoga mat or yoga pants in sight. Archaa spent 6 years as a classroom teacher and teaching yoga combines 2 of her greatest passions. Yoga - and its associated postures and breath techniques - tie deeply to her cultural roots and help her connect to her spirit.

I am brave, I am bruised, I am who I'm meant to be

- Keala Settle (This is Me from the Greatest Showman soundtrack)

Emma (she/her)

Emma (she/her) started gymnastics at the age of 4 and fell in love with dance (mostly hip hop) and musical theater through the following years. She was in her high school's theater company and was dance team captain, and with the exception of learning TikTok dances during the pandemic, had lost touch with her passion for teaching and performing over the past decade. She credits Hipline for bringing her closer to her love of movement and music, and is absolutely thrilled to be part of this inclusive community. Her favorite things include delicious Asian food, comedy, live music, and exploring a new national park or foreign city. Emma was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada and moved to the Bay Area in 2014 to pursue a career in marketing and events.

Music heals too.

- | Björk

Em (he/she/they)

Em (he/she/they) didn't discover dance until 2016, when she first stepped foot on the Hipline dance floor and found their life forever changed. Dance was a way to fuse Em's lifelong loves of music, creative expression and physicality. Over the past years, Em's been a dancing fiend and a devoted student of movement, taking lessons in Jamaican dancehall, hip hop, bellydance and more to add finesse and artistic dimension on top of his background in kickboxing, martial arts, wrestling and rockclimbing. Em is beyond excited to join the Shimmy Pop team and hopes to share her warmth and passion with dancers of all skill levels.

And when you're ready sis, we'll be right here

- Us , Ruby Ibarra (feat. Rocky Rivera, Klassy & Faith Santilla), Circa91

Isabelle (they/them)

Isabelle is an Oakland native and a first generation immigrant. With their mom born and raised in the Philippines and their dad from England, they struggled to find a place where they truly felt like they were seen, until they found Hipline.

Isabelle studied dance at Oakland School for the Arts but started living in their body when they joined Hipline in 2016. Isabelle encourages folks who come to her class to be the most “ dramatic ” version of themselves. Throw a tantrum, scream, cry, laugh hysterically and touch yourself. Isabelle firmly believes that vulnerability and emotionality is where community truly begins.

What will we do when we get old? Will we walk down the same road? Will you be there by my side? Standing strong as the waves roll over

- Lean On | DJ Snake & Major Lazer

Gabriela (she/her)

Since I was little, all I ever wanted to do was dance. I guess you could say that I had to patiently wait until I was 27 for the stars to align and the opportunity to really present itself. Sure, I got my dance in at The Sound Factory with my fake ID way before I was 21, and maybe you even saw me at City Nights in my halter top and clunky black shoes; I lived for jumping in the car with my girlfriends, crossing that bridge and getting into the city to dance all night. And now, (many) years later, as a grateful mama of two tiny dancers, the magic isn’t lost on me that I get to be a part of Hipline seven days a week. I’m proud of what we’ve built over the last ten years. I am a first generation Lebanese Peruvian, and it has taken a lot of hard work to build a sustainable business in the Bay. I have a deep respect and love for everyone that comes to try us out and all the ladies that have been with us over the years. I believe with all my heart (and my heart is huge) that we gotta keep dancing to make the change we want to see in this world.

Dance is one of the great joys in my life and has definitely shaped me into the person I am today. My dance teachers growing up always said to take as many classes you can from whoever you can. Thankfully I took their advice! From ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, modern, hip hop, pom/cheerleading, and gymnastics - each of these forms of dance and movement have made a lasting impression in my mind and body, each building upon each other, each making me fall in love again and again. I'm super excited and honored to share my love of dance with you!

I’ll admit, I passed by the studio for 10 years on my way to TJs, and thought it wasn’t for me — is it a cult? But once I tried it, I quickly found out that it IS a cult — a cult of positive energy and encouragement, body and color positivity, and embracing movement of all types. My kind of cult.

I started attending classes at Hipline in 2019, & discovered an opportunity to re-connect with my body for the first time since I became a mother in 2014, a safe space for expression & release, & a structure that invited me to experience movement authentically, bringing whoever I might be on any given day. I am a member because it has literally changed the way I think about myself & my body, & because I get not just physical benefits, but emotional & mental health benefits, too. Hipline is a true gift, and I'm so grateful for all of it.
