about belly dance
Belly Dance is a Western term for a traditional Middle Eastern dance form. In the Arabic language it is known as Raqs Sharqi (literally “oriental dance”) or sometimes Raqs Baladi (literally “folk” or “national” dance). Where belly dancing is a native dance, children learn it from an early age. As with many social dances, children learn it informally, by observing and imitating their elders during family and community celebrations, as well as during informal gatherings with friends.
Just as the dance evokes mystery, so does its origin. There are many theories, including starting as a religious dance or birthing practice. Regardless, it has thrived all over the world and into pop-culture.
Today, Belly Dance is taught in classes throughout the world. “Belly dancing has emerged as one of the hot new workout trends in recent years, according to the American Council on Exercise. The fitness advocate group says belly dancing and other dances have evolved from the traditional concepts to become heart-pumping workouts in gyms across the nation.” CNN.com June, 2003.
The benefits of Belly Dance are both mental and physical. Whether your goal is to improve your overall physical conditioning, loose weight, or simply become more aware of your feminine identity, each person's individual needs can be met through the versatility of Belly Dance. Regardless of age, weight, or whether you are a trepid or timid personality, Belly Dancing is waiting for you. See you on the dance floor!
